St. Mark's was built at a time when there was also a renewed interest in Byzantine art. With the interior of the building, you see the characteristics of the early church's use of the basic basilica plan with apse, arches, narrow nave, and columns on two sides, supporting the clerestory and separating the nave from the side aisles.
